What is LLE?

LLE is England’s new student finance system for most undergraduate courses starting from January 2027. It supports eligible full qualifications and selected shorter modules, giving you more flexibility to study or retrain.

Students already funded for a course that started before January 2027 will normally continue under their existing arrangements.

Paid to your university
Tuition Fee Loan

Helps cover the tuition fee charged by your university or college, so you do not normally pay it upfront.

Up to £39,160 in total tuition fee loans

Standard full-time course

New learners may access tuition funding equivalent to around four years of full-time study at 2026/27 rates. Previous publicly funded study can reduce the amount available.

The maximum loan is currently £9,790 per 120 credits, although lower limits apply to some providers and courses, including certain foundation years. Your loan may not cover the full fee charged.

Paid into your bank
Maintenance Loan

Helps with rent, food, travel and study costs.
Your amount depends on household income, living arrangements, course length and credits studied. Studying fewer than 120 credits usually reduces your entitlement proportionally.

STARTING FROM JANUARY 2027?
New LLE funding rules apply

Many students beginning eligible courses on or after 1 January 2027 will apply through the Lifelong Learning Entitlement system.

9%

of income above the threshold

PLAN 5 REPAYMENTS
Repayments depend on income

For most undergraduates starting from August 2023, the 2026/27 threshold is £25,000. You repay 9% only on income above that threshold, and repayments stop if earnings fall below it.
